Answers

  1. Will putting up a bat house get rid of my mosquitoes?

Unfortunately, no. It is rare for a predator to eradicate its prey. But bats definitely WILL help control them. Most people find that mosquito numbers are greatly reduced when bats regularly hunt in the area.

  2. Will my neighbor's bat house attract bats to my house?

If bats wanted to, and were able to stay in your house, they would already be there. Bats are around us all the time in summer. Giving them a home only results in their being more likely to feed in the area before scattering to forage the rest of the night.

  3. Why aren't bats using my bat house?

Unfortunately there are no guarantees. But there are things you can check to make sure you are providing the best bat habitat possible. In the Pacific Northwest, bats want warm places to roost, so put your house where it gets as much sun as possible. If it is hanging in a tree, make sure branches aren't shading it. Paint it a dark color. Caulk the sides and top so the bats' body heat will be retained. Make sure the back of the house extends down a few inches to give them a "landing pad". See if the crevices are more than 1" wide and, if they are, add more to narrow them. If you still do not have residents, the only thing left is patience. Bats are so faithful to their known roosts, it sometimes it takes a number of years for them to find a new one.

  4. How can I tell if bats are using my bat house?

Sometimes the bats are using a house as a night roost between feeding bouts. If so, you won't see them during the day. But you can check this by putting a piece of white plastic under the house and seeing if it collects any droppings.
